What is Metabolic Balance®?

Metabolic Balance® is a nutritional programme for healthy weight management and wellbeing. It was developed by doctors and nutrition scientists in Germany and is well established in more than 35 countries worldwide including the UK and USA. It was introduced to the UK in 2008.

A personal plan just for You

Metabolic Balance® supports weight adjustment by working with your individual body chemistry. This is determined at the beginning of the programme via a blood test, a detailed health history, your measurements and your target weight. You will receive a personal Food List and Meal Plan based on these factors. Metabolic Balance® is not to be confused with the Blood Type Diet – it is not based on your blood type, it is based on an analysis of your own blood.

What makes Metabolic Balance® different?

Metabolic Balance® facilitates permanent weight loss through a change in your diet that is accomplished without hunger or fasting. There are no supplements or meal replacements, no calorie counting or fat free products. This is not a fad diet. You eat three nutritious meals everyday and choose the foods for your meals from your personal Food List.

The four phases of Metabolic Balance®

Phase 1 is a mild two day detox.

Phase 2 is the strictest phase and lasts for 2 weeks. You eat according to your individual Food List and Meal Plan.

Phase 3 allows you to expand your Food List a little more, encourages the use of healthy oils in cooking and meals and allows you to eat “off plan” once a week. This “cheat meal” is actively encouraged as it can help with the overall success of the plan and is a very motivating part of the programme.

Phase 4 is the maintenance phase and this begins when you are happy with your weight, health and new found energy! This is essentially a phase for life as you will have learnt the types of foods, macronutrient ratios and portions sizes that suit you and you can utilise this knowledge to eat well without sticking rigidly to a fixed plan.

This may be a serving of yoghurt with a portion of fruit; or eggs on rye toast with a portion of mushrooms; or perhaps a seed or nut based breakfast – I give ideas of how to make the meals work for you so that they are enjoyable and easy to prepare.



Chicken salad; roast vegetables with melted cheese; fish and rye toast; omelette and salad.



Grilled salmon with vegetables; lentil soup; homemade beef or turkey burgers and salad; stir fry vegetables with tofu or prawns.

How does Metabolic Balance® work?

Your personal Meal Plan promotes hormone balance primarily by regulating the amount of insulin you produce, thus encouraging fat burning, decreasing fat storage and supporting the production of ‘anti-ageing’ hormones. In addition to this, as an effective weight loss programme based upon the inclusion of healthy real food in your diet, the Metabolic Balance® programme may also have a positive effect on the following health issues:
