Far Infrared (FIR) rays are invisible and present in sunlight. They were discovered by a scientist named Sir William Herschel in 1800. His research led to the discovery that there were not only the known visible rays – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet – but there were also invisible rays later named Infrared.
The sun produces most of its energy in the FIR segment of the spectrum. FIR therapy utilises the power of these invisible wavelengths of light which have a therapeutic & warming effect when absorbed by the body. Think of how wonderful you feel when sitting in the warm sunshine.
FIR devices have gained in popularity in the last few years. In a hectic world where stress causes overactivation of our sympathetic nervous system and toxins accumulate in our bodies daily, FIR offers a novel way to calm the nervous system and stimulate gentle but powerful detoxification pathways in the body.
These are the two main reasons that I first became interested on a personal level in FIR. I have had previous exposure to toxic mould. Mould spores and the mycotoxins that they produce can accumulate in the body causing many problematic symptoms. FIR is a fantastic tool to help to detoxify these organisms. Elimination of heavy metals and other chemical toxins can also be supported with FIR.
Full Body FIR Therapy is particularly helpful for boosting circulation, helping to deliver more blood, oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. This is similar to the effects you feel after exercise. It is deeply relaxing and also energising. Common symptoms of poor circulation include pain and inflammation. FIR may help soothe these symptoms. I see many clients who suffer from fatigue and are unable to exercise. FIR is a way in which they can gain the benefits of better circulation and oxygen delivery.
Unlike conventional saunas, high temperatures and profuse sweating are not necessary for FIR therapy to be effective. FIR is able to warm the body and raise core temperature at very comfortable lower temperatures. Raising core temperature is amazingly supportive for both metabolism and the immune system.
The benefits of FIR are impressive. I personally have experienced an improved sense of wellbeing from using this therapy myself. I believe that it has helped me hugely with detoxing, relaxing and supporting my immunity.
I offer a £10 taster session to anyone who wants to come along to try FIR for themselves. The taster session could be anything from 2 mins to 10 mins, depending on state of health. For very fatigued clients with a history of chronic ill health, we start low and slow. For people in better health, longer sessions can be started more quickly. You will not typically sweat in the sessions. I use lower temperatures for between 10-40mins for huge therapeutic benefit without the need to get uncomfortably hot. I advise to wear thin cotton clothing for your session. Jogging bottoms and a long sleeved T shirt top and socks are ideal.
My FIR device is a Cocoon model. It is rather like a very large sleeping bag. FIR rays emit within the Cocoon to penetrate your body. Unlike many FIR devices/saunas, the Cocoon emits no harmful electromagnetic radiation.
You can experience FIR as a stand alone therapy or as part of a wider treatment. Many clients add a session onto the end of a regular consultation. After your initial taster session, the cost for ongoing treatment is £1 per minute.
