Biochemical Tests
Biochemical tests can be an invaluable tool to determine the root cause of health problems. Tests involve either stool, saliva, urine, hair or blood samples and are carried out by independent testing laboratories. Comprehensive test kits are provided, to be returned via post for analysis.
Testing eliminates the guesswork behind ill health. Results lead to a specific nutritional programme. Retesting can then be undertaken at a later date to check the success of the programme. During your consultation your therapist will highlight any tests which may be useful. You then decide if you wish to proceed. Commonly recommended tests are outlined below:
Yeast overgrowth, bacterial imbalance, parasitic infection, insufficient digestive enzymes, intestinal inflammation, low levels of intestinal immunity, food intolerances and leaky gut syndrome are all common reasons why digestive discomfort may occur.
These underlying imbalances may also contribute to health concerns such as fatigue, mood disturbances, skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, PMS, infertility....the list is extensive.
Comprehensive digestive tests can be invaluable in determining the cause of digestive problems.
Food allergy or intolerance is becoming increasingly common. Allergies to foods such as peanuts are well known and can result in severe reactions. However milder intolerances to foods such as gluten, wheat, dairy, eggs and soy are also widespread, resulting in symptoms such as digestive discomfort, skin conditions, insomnia, depression, anxiety and asthma, to name just a few.
These intolerances are harder to isolate as symptoms can sometimes take several hours, or even days to manifest. Simple pin prick blood tests can test rections to over 100 foods. Elimination of positive foods often results in speedy resolution of symptoms.
Hair Mineral Testing
Certain minerals such as zinc, magnesium, calcium and selenium are vital for good health. These minerals are present in the food we eat and are absorbed when food is digested. Deficiency of essential minerals is common. For example, white spots on fingernails can be indicative of zinc deficiency. Magnesium dificiency can contribute to muscle aches.
In contrast, toxic metals such as mercury, lead and aluminium can also build up in the body, exerting a negative effect on health. Analysis of a small amount of hair can indicate both a deficiency of essential minerals and an excess of toxic metals.
Adrenal & Thyroid Testing
The adrenal glands and the thyroid gland release hormones that help us to sustain energy levels, cope with stress and maintain body temperature and metabolic rate. Prolonged emotional, dietary or environmental stress can lead to fatigued adrenals - the overriding symptom of this is low energy levels. Poor adrenal function is then just one reason why
the thyroid gland may underfunction, resulting in weight gain, difficulty losing weight, cold hands and feet, hair loss and dry skin. Low adrenal and thyroid hormone levels can help explain a myriad of symptoms and subsequent targeted nutritional and supplement strategies can bring considerable relief.
